Discovering The Mystery Of The History Of Billiard Tables
01/29/2008
History of the game of billiards is somewhat mysterious. The word billiards is a derivation from the French world “Billie” that has the meaning of a ball. However, unlike other balls, the billiard ball is used on billiard tables. If you take a peep in the ravines of history, you will find that the game of billiards existed even during the era of Queen Elizabeth I. It did find a mention in the Shakespearean play of ‘Anthony and Cleopetra’.
However, the game had its variations. The game was also played on a different pool table with six pockets and a good number of balls unlike the billiards table where only three balls were used. Peculiarly enough, the game of carom that uses dots instead of balls is considered to be pocket less billiards table whereas the Pool tables are considered to be pocket billiards table.
Experts opine that the game was an origin from the French game of Croquet. This game is played on a smooth grass bed using big balls. Initially, like croquet, billiards too was played outdoors but at some point or other someone decided to take it indoors. Thus for many it is considered to be a table version of the croquet. In some countries the game is extremely popular and the ingredients remain in high demand so much so that even the used pool tables for sale also bring up a good price for you.
