If there is one thing you need to do while learning how to play the guitar is to practice it. Some people practice because they know that if they are highly disciplined that they will become better. Others practice because they think its fun and enjoy doing it. However, not too many people are highly disciplined and having fun which is why so many people give up this difficult to master instrument. But it really doesn’t have to be that way. You can actually practice religiously and have fun doing it at the same time. Balance is so important to practicing the guitar.

You need your self discipline but you also need to enjoy the process. First things first, you must find guitar playing to be fulfilling in some way. If you don’t know the reason you are doing it or you are doing it for someone other than yourself you will never enjoy practicing. You are more likely to quit well before you become good. On the other hand if you have strong reasons for playing and actually feel them you will be able to put in the necessary intensity to build up your skill. By looking at practicing as something you can do to achieve a goal, which is to be a better player, you will automatically create a reason behind it other than to just have fun. Then it won’t seem like such a chore. One of the biggest mistakes that beginners make is to think that the process of practicing is tedious or boring.

Then practice simply becomes mindless and not something that you are very engaged in. It is very difficult to enjoy this type of practicing if you are constantly thinking that you would rather be doing something else. Incorporating a little variety into your practice schedule can make all the difference. It doesn’t mean that you are lacking focus or that you aren’t taking it serious, it just means that you are trying to put a little fun into the everyday grind. You can apply multiple approaches to learning and integrate new musical skills, even if only for a few minutes during your practice of the basic notes and chords. It is absolutely conceivable that you can have fun and get results at the same time.

Having fun while playing guitar doesn’t just mean jamming with a few friends or doing a little random practicing; it means enjoying what you are doing. While it is true that disorganized practice will not bring the greatest results, it can bring a little creativity and help build up techniques that you may not even realize. It can garner confidence in your ability to play and help you to relieve boredom. To achieve a great balance of enjoying your practice while being self disciplined you should make your practice fulfilling, immerse yourself in inspiration by remembering what made you want to play in the first place, and never give up. The guitar may take a while to learn but many people before you did it and many people after you will do it. So, don’t lose your desire to play and just keep at it.
